According to Jupiter Research’s “U.S. Broadband Forecast, 2007 to 2012”, 36 million new broadband subscribers will be added in the five year period and nearly 70 percent of U.S. households will have broadband access, totaling approximately 86 million homes by 2012. Yet PC-based content and consumer entertainment (CE) content remain separate islands in many homes because there has been no simple, reliable way to share and distribute this multimedia content throughout the whole house.
Fortunately, the solution to this problem is as close as the nearest electric wall socket. By using Atheros’ HomePlug-based powerline technology, developed by Intellon, as the network backbone, service providers can now bridge these separate islands and deliver whole-house connectivity without expensive installations of new wiring (Ethernet cables, phone lines or Cat-5 cable).
With power lines serving as the network backbone, every electrical outlet in the home instantly becomes a network access point. This means consumers can easily install advanced applications such as broadband sharing, Wi-Fi extension and networked entertainment themselves. For service providers this also means no costly professional installations, no continuing service calls, and no new wires!
In addition to enhancing and extending the home Wi-Fi environment, Atheros powerline technology opens the gateway for service providers to roll out "convergence" services such as VoIP and IPTV. These self-installed services generate new revenue streams for service providers while keeping customer support costs low.
